The International Cultural Association (Location: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; Chairperson: Akemi Shimomura) held the 60th Miss International Beauty Pageant 2022 on December 13, 2022 (Tues.) at Tokyo Dome City Hall to determine the Miss International 2022. The winner among the 66 representatives from countries and regions around the world was Jasmin Selberg representing Germany.

Miss International Beauty Pageant (hereinafter “Miss International”), is one of the world’s three largest beauty pageants, along with Miss World and Miss Universe, and was created in the United States in 1960; this year marking the 60th event. The pageant’s purpose is more than a beauty contest, but aims to achieve world peace by deepening mutual understanding between participating nations through international exchanges, friendship, and social contribution activities in the host country. The contestants with high motivations willing to pursue these goals gather as “beauty goodwill ambassadors” and take part in the international competition with the aim of deepening mutual exchange.

This year’s pageant was the first in three years, and the competition started with an opening performance by a guest artist well-known in Japan, as well as abroad, Miyavi! The 66 contestants selected to represent their countries and regions around the world competed in national costumes, swimsuits, speech, and other judging criteria to achieve the honor of being crowned Miss International 2022.
In addition, winners of 2nd to 4th runners-up, Continental Queens (Miss International Asia, Africa, Europe, Oceania, and America), and Miss International Special Award (Best National Costume, Best in Swimsuit, Best in Evening Gown, and Miss Photogenic) were presented. During the competition, Miyavi performed a special collaboration with the Kodo Taiko Performing Arts Ensemble, a taiko drumming troupe that has performed in 53 countries and regions around the world, which was suggested by Miyavi himself. This powerful performance enlivened the pageant.

The 60th Miss International Beauty Pageant 2022 came to a close with a joyful winning speech by Jasmin Selberg, Miss International 2022.

Honestly, I still can’t believe it. I’m a bit embarrassed and I can’t find the right words.
I have always hoped to make happy memories when I came to Japan, but this time, I’m over the moon that I was able to make some beautiful new sisters, those who are up here on the stage with me, who will forever share my journey.
When I was a teenager, I loved manga and anime so it was my dream to come to Japan one day.
I would never have thought that in the place I longed to visit since I was young, I would achieve the dream I have held as an adult.
I am really very happy. I want to thank my family for believing in me, and all of my sisters up here, for helping me see a strength in me that I was not aware of myself.

■About Miss International
Miss International, officially called the Miss International Beauty Pageant, started in the United States in 1960. Although it was held in the United States for the first seven years, the right to hold the event was transferred to Japan to celebrate the holding of Japan World Exposition in Osaka in 1970. The pageant is more than a simple beauty contest, but aims to achieve world peace by deepening mutual understanding between participating nations through international exchanges, friendship, and social contribution activities in the hosting country. Moreover, the pageant wishes to cheer on all women in a way that the actions of the women who have taken on the challenge of this global competition will extend their challenge to their own personal growth, and also instill courage and challenges in as many women as possible. The global competition in which representatives gather from many countries and regions as “beauty goodwill ambassadors” is held every year. Here, the pageant aims to send out prayers for peace and appeal the wonders of the host country, Japan, across the world. Miss International also conducts international exchange activities on an individual level. Through social contribution activities such as the Greening Campaign and Miss International Forum, as well as charity events, Miss International works to deepen friendship and goodwill between Japan and the rest of the world.
